Stripe Patterns and the Eikonal Equation
نویسنده
چکیده
We study a new formulation for the eikonal equation |∇u| = 1 on a bounded subset of R. Considering a field P of orthogonal projections onto 1-dimensional subspaces, with divP ∈ L, we prove existence and uniqueness for solutions of the equation P divP = 0. We give a geometric description, comparable with the classical case, and we prove that such solutions exist only if the domain is a tubular neighbourhood of a regular closed curve. This formulation provides a useful approach to the analysis of stripe patterns. It is specifically suited to systems where the physical properties of the pattern are invariant under rotation over 180 degrees, such as systems of block copolymers or liquid crystals. Stripe patterns and a projection-valued formulation of the eikonal equation.
We describe recent work on striped patterns in a system of block copolymers. A by-product of the characterization of such patterns is a new formulation of the eikonal equation. In this formulation, the unknown is a field of projection matrices of the form P=e⊗e, where e is a unit vector field. We describe how this formulation is better adapted to the description of striped patterns than the cla...

We study a new formulation for the eikonal equation |∇u| = 1 on a bounded subset of R. Instead of a vector field ∇u, we consider a field P of orthogonal projections on 1-dimensional subspaces, with div P ∈ L. We prove that solutions of this equation propagate direction as in the classical eikonal equation. We also show that solutions exist if and only if the domain is a tubular neighbourhood of...
متن کاملStripe patterns in a model for block copolymers
We consider a pattern-forming system in two space dimensions defined by an energy Gε. The functional Gε models strong phase separation in AB diblock copolymer melts, and patterns are represented by {0, 1}-valued functions; the values 0 and 1 correspond to the A and B phases. The parameter ε is the ratio between the intrinsic, material length scale and the scale of the domain Ω. We show that in ...

متن کاملOptimal Control of Light Propagation Governed by Eikonal Equation within Inhomogeneous Media Using Computational Adjoint Approach
A mathematical model is presented in the present study to control the light propagation in an inhomogeneous media. The method is based on the identification of the optimal materials distribution in the media such that the trajectories of light rays follow the desired path. The problem is formulated as a distributed parameter identification problem and it is solved by a numerical met...
